Having grown up in Tornado Alley, I have been well aware of the destructive power of tornadoes for most of my life. Spending more than a decade driving eighteen-wheelers cross-country has made me aware of how people have a tendency not to understand weather events infrequent to their region(s) - and Salt Lake City isn't known for having tornadoes.
But as residents discovered on 11 August 1999, even the Great Salt Lake is not immune to tornadic activity.
